Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fattened cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.”‘ –

Matthew 22:4

In the days before the construction of modern harbours, a ship had to wait a distance away from the shore to wait for the high tide before they could make it to port. Since they could not berth when the tide was low, the sea Captains had to wait for the critical moment when the tide turned so that they could quickly bring their ships to port. This precise timing skill was known in Latin as, `ob portu’. It is a term that literally means, ‘standing off port, waiting for the moment.’

The English word opportunity is derived from this original meaning. The captain and the crew were ready and waiting for that one moment when the tide changed in order to act. They knew that if they missed it, they would have to endure a long wait offshore.

To recognize opportunity is the difference between success and failure. When opportunity knocks, we have to get up and answer the door. Sadly, many people are unable to do just that. They pray hard for God’s intervention yet when the moment comes for the Lord to honour their prayers, they either fail to see the Opportunity or hesitate and miss the opportunity.

Don’t spend all your time roaming on the high seas of life and never landing at your port of call. Open the eyes of your understanding and see the opportunity that God has brought your way. If it is of God, just step out in faith and trust Him for victory.

Prayer:

Lord, open my eyes to see and provide the courage to take the opportunities you bring my way.Scriptural Reading:
