“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” —

1 John 1:9

When it comes to confession of sin, believers are told in 1 John 1:9 to confess their sins to God.

There are two types of confession in the Bible: an initial confession of faith in Jesus Christ, which guarantees your salvation in Christ and the gift of eternal life; the other is an ongoing confession of our sins to God thereafter. Once a believer, you aren’t required to confess your faith every time you sin, but confess your sin to the Lord the moment you realise that you have sinned. Christians confess their sins to God to practise humility before Him. It takes humility to admit mistakes.

A child’s action may make his parents angry or sad, but it doesn’t mean he is no longer their child. Still he needs to confess to repair his relationship with his parents. The same is true for God’s children. God’s love for you does not change when you sin. You don’t lose your salvation through sin. However, to be close to God again and restore the relationship, you need to confess your sin and receive His forgiveness. This will help you to walk joyfully with the Lord always. When you come to Jesus with your sins no matter the frequency, there is nothing more you can do besides confessing. You are only to declare and confess what has already been paid for.

Sometimes restitution with others may be necessary, but once you confess your sins to God and ask His forgiveness it is no longer held against you. Don’t imprison yourself with guilt after you have confessed to the Lord. You are free in His sight.

Prayer:

Search your heart, repent and confess your sins to the Lord; ask for His forgiveness.
