But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy for I am holy.” —

1 Peter 1:15-16

God is holy, and He calls on all who believe in him to imitate his holiness. God’s holiness pervades His entirety and shapes all His attributes. His love, His mercy and even His anger is holy. His very being is completely absent of a trace of sin.

As believers, we need to be “set apart” from the world unto the Lord. We need to be living by God’s standards, not the world’s. God isn’t calling us to be perfect, but to be distinct from the world. First Peter 2:9 describes believers as “a holy nation.” It is a fact! We are separated from the world and we need to live out that reality in our daily lives.

Christians must imitate the God we worship and form our character in accordance with His. We must do what is right and practise virtues approved by God. God who is the object of our worship is holy, so must His worshippers also be.

Holiness is a product of a right relationship with God, believing in Jesus Christ as Saviour. If Jesus is not yet your saviour from our sins, then your pursuit of holiness is in vain; first make sure you are born-again. Secondly, recognise that your position in Christ and your relationship with God automatically sets you apart from the world. Therefore you must daily live a set-apart life, not trying to blend in with the world, rather living according to God’s Word as we study the Bible and grow in it.

God is holy in all His ways. If we are to be like Him, we must be holy in all that we do and say.

Prayer:

Thank you Father for allowing me to participate in your holiness; give me grace to pursue holiness.
