Now Joseph was governor over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed down before him with their faces to the earth. —

Genesis 42:6

Several years earlier, Joseph had dreamt what sounded like a bizarre dream: the sun, moon and eleven stars bowed to him. He was clearly destined to become so prominent that the whole family would do obeisance to him. Very often when we get a glimpse of the future God has in store for us we expect it to start manifesting immediately.

In Joseph’s case, the events of the immediate aftermath were a total contradiction of the dream. He was thrown into a well by his brothers, sold to Ishmaelites and resold to Potiphar in Egypt as a slave. Then followed years of pain, setbacks, disappointment and betrayal. It appeared that instead of the sun shining on Joseph or bowing to him, it was more like dark clouds all around him. Human as he was, he probably may have considered forgetting the dream or shelving any lingering hope.

Eventually, by divine orchestration and the most unlikely of circumstances, the moment of destiny finally arrived. Joseph was promoted as head of government in Egypt. And now by a twist of events, here were his brothers bowing, as the dream had said they would. In verse 9, Joseph remembered his dreams. What happens when you finally get to the place of destiny? Do you laugh, cry or gloat? Or are you lost for words when you realize that even in your darkest moments, God was always there, quietly working things out for your good. Give God praise today and be assured that He is at work in your life.

Prayer:

Father, I thank You that You are not a man to lie or repent. Whatever You have said concerning my life will come to pass without fail.
