He who troubles his own house will inherit the wind, And the fool will be servant to the wise of heart. —

Proverbs 11:29

Whether at the home, organisational or at national level, a leader is expected to provide vision, mobilise resources, organise members of the team and bring out the best in them. People who cause distress in their own homes or undertakings shall inherit emptiness and disappointment.

How can a person trouble his or her own house? On the home front, parents can trouble their house by being irresponsible, immoral or making unwise professional decisions. Dissipating family resources on gambling, drugs or frivolous ventures at the expense of priorities like food, education and healthcare can trouble your house. The consequences of such decisions often hurt their loved ones.

On the corporate front, greedy, lazy or corrupt leaders can trouble their own businesses. A CEO can trouble his or her firm by impulsively committing company resources to unfruitful ventures leading to financial losses and job cuts. Contentious people can disrupt an otherwise peaceful environment. On the national front, leaders who make wrong decisions can trouble their nation. Rehoboam’s disrespectful response in 1 Kings 12:14 caused great distress and led to a major national secession. When you trouble your house and make it a difficult place to live instead of a haven of peace, love and nurture, you end up inheriting nothing. People drift away from you, hate you or fight you back, leading to bitterness and strife.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to make my home a haven of peace and progress.
