So Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words which the LORD has said we will do.” —

Exodus 24:3

There were about 613 rules and regulations God gave Israel through Moses. Moses captured all of them in writing and openly read them to the people who affirmed their willingness to obey. The Law had three components: the Moral Code or Ten Commandments, the Ceremonial Code that detailed ceremonies for worship and sacrifice, and the Civic Code which was the set of acceptable societal behaviours and relationships. Before the Law was released in structured writings, the principles of the Law were in existence and everyone, from Adam to Christ, lived under them.

In Matthew 5:17-18, Jesus gave His position on the Law, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfil. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” In Luke 24:44, He added that “all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” Jesus said the Law was written about Him. He therefore came to rather fulfil the Law.

The principle is similar to a cheque which is fulfilled when it is cashed at the bank. Jesus paid or fulfilled the cheque of the Law on the cross. Romans 10:4 says, “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” Jesus has now lifted the bar even higher with a new standard of grace.
