Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors. —

Genesis 37:3

As an artist and collector of art, I find great value in abstract pieces. Abstract art does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead uses shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect. A person without an artistic inclination would easily dismiss the worth of an abstract piece that is actually a collector’s item; however, the connoisseurs of art are able to decipher the hidden meaning.

Joseph’s life had a certain abstract outlook about it. It can best be described as a kaleidoscope. A kaleidoscope is “a constantly changing pattern or sequence of events.” The story of his life opens with a unique gift from his father – a beautiful coat of many colours. Joseph also had dreams that suggested impending greatness. However, he had to endure years of pain and disappointment until he finally emerged as saviour of the world. His brothers who sold him into slavery were remorseful when they realised who he had become. Joseph’s response in Genesis 50:20 was instructive: “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”

Our lives are often like that. God, the divine artist, is generating a masterpiece with us. The final picture, however, remains a mystery throughout the painting process. What we rather see is a kaleidoscope, a constantly changing pattern that often looks unclear. The good news is that the final image, when revealed, will be the perfect picture.
