Then the king said, “What honour or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?” And the king’s servants who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.” —

Esther 6:3

Today’s lesson is about divine timing. Sometimes we expect to be rewarded immediately or speedily for the good we do and the services we render to God and man. We naturally feel disappointed when our reward delays or someone we have helped forgets or fails to appreciate our efforts. There is, however, the ideal timing for every reward. Not every action or investment must be rewarded immediately. There is something called premature remuneration.

Mordecai had saved King Ahasuerus’ life by reporting a planned assassination attempt. The act of loyalty was recorded but forgotten until one day when Haman was plotting to have Mordecai killed. God chose that time to bring Mordecai’s act of loyalty to the king’s attention. In the events that ensued, Mordecai was promoted while Haman was hanged by the king.

Because the timing was right, the reward was not only significant but also life-saving. It is possible that if Mordecai had been remembered earlier, he might just have been given a token. Circumstances and timing increased the value of his reward. Joseph had a similar experience. Had Pharaoh’s chief butler remembered Joseph earlier, he may have recommended him to be freed from wrongful imprisonment. God’s reward scheme takes into consideration the day of your greatest need. May God show you forth at the time of your greatest need. May He cause you to be remembered and honoured for your faithfulness over the years.

Prayer:

Lord, grant me the patience to always wait for You and never miss out on Your perfect timing.
