The twin concepts of grace and faith are inextricably linked with our salvation and the workings of God in our lives. Ephesians 2:8 suggests that salvation is a work of grace that manifests through faith. You cannot live by faith without grace and vice versa. Grace qualifies us. Faith enables us. The empowerment we receive after we hear God’s word is grace. Stepping out to act on what we hear is faith. It is this combination that saved us,

Imagine a traveler who comes to a large valley with crocodile infested waters he can neither jump across nor walk around. He needs to get to the other side safely in order to continue on his journey. If God calls out from heaven and provides a bridge to the other side, it is the work of grace – God’s unmerited favour and involvement in our lives. Grace therefore creates the bridge over the troubled waters of our lives.

It however takes faith to step out and cross the bridge. The bridge, which is God’s gracious provision, may be strong, fortified and adequate to carry the man across. If, however, he stays on one side because of fear and does not exercise the faith required to cross the bridge, he will not enjoy the fullness of God’s gracious provision; and it will be because of his lack of faith. That is why Hebrews 11:6 warns that, “without faith it is impossible to please Him.” God, by His grace, has provided a bridge over every situation in your life. It’s up to you to step out by faith and walk on the bridge.

Prayer:

Father, strengthen me to fully benefit from the riches of Your grace.
