Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. —

2 Corinthians 5:17

The death of Christ gave us a new identity in Him. We identify with Christ in three ways. Firstly, we identify with Him in His death. When He died, we also died because we were in Him. Secondly, we identify with Christ in the Spirit. We do not principally regard ourselves by our ethnic, national, gender or physical nature. We first regard ourselves in Christ. In the flesh, we may even be weak, broke or rejected but in the Spirit we are strong, rich and accepted in the beloved. Thirdly, we identify with Christ in His Life. As a result, if ANYONE is in Christ, he is a new creation. He is not a renovation. The Greek words for New Creation translate as “An individual of a kind not seen before, brought into being by God.” Old things are not now passing away. All things have become new.

What kind of person is the new creation? Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Combining that with Ephesians 4:22-24, we can conclude that:

The New Creation is God’s masterpiece or handiwork.

God did not outsource any part to anyone. He did not rely on your mother or father in creating you. You are His workmanship.

The New Creation is created in Righteousness.

Our Christlike nature makes holiness and righteousness natural and living a sinful life difficult. We are made for good works.

The New Creation is designed to do God’s will or to please Him.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, we are able to live lives that are pleasing to Him.

Prayer:

Father, help me to manifest the new life in Christ at all times.
