So it was, when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, that she found favour in his sight, and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand. Then Esther went near and touched the top of the sceptre. —

Esther 5:2

A sceptre is the symbol of a ruler’s authority. Authority in God’s kingdom is exercised through the power of righteousness. Psalm 45:6 says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of Your kingdom.” Esther was a queen who did not know how to rule. She must have heard the story of Queen Vashti’s failures and made that her limitation. She must have told herself, “Enjoy the title of queen but don’t exercise any authority or you could die.” What happened when Mordecai challenged Esther?

Boldness of Access.

She defied the restrictions and went and stood in the inner court.

Grace.

Esther found favour in the king’s sight. Esther had put on her royal garments. We ought to put on the garment of righteousness in Christ.

Righteousness.

She was given access to the sceptre. By touching the sceptre she asserted her position as joint heir with the king.

Rulership.

The king offered, upfront, up to half of his kingdom if Esther wanted it. This speaks of rulership, access and unlimited resources.

These same principles are applicable to us. We are the bride of Christ and cannot allow ourselves to be shortchanged by any traditions of men. It takes boldness to step up and access the limitless riches available in Christ.

Prayer:

Father, I come boldly before Your throne of grace to find mercy and help in my time of need.
