There was another instruction involved. They were not to look back as they fled. Mrs. Lot, for some reason, chose to have one last look and was turned into a pillar of salt. Her decision had dire consequences for herself and later for the whole family. We often focus our narrative on Mrs. Lot’s disobedience or her lust after the old life of sin. But the story also reveals another dimension – a lack of spousal or partnership alignment. Did Lot communicate clearly to his wife? Was she fully conscious of God’s power?
A person may obey an unusual leading from God or decide on a course of action that has obvious consequences for his or her entire family. It could be a health option you exercise or a decision to sell a property, go into politics, full-time missions, back to school, a radical career switch or something equally significant. This passage underscores the need to share the new direction with your spouse, family or business partners to ensure full alignment with the decision. If not, don’t be surprised if there is opposition or resistance. Mentally travelling such journeys with our spouse, partner or children helps them to fully appreciate our decisions.
Prayer:
