Isaiah 7:14
The passage tells us three things about the birth of Christ.
The first is that His birth was a sign from the Lord.
God marked the birth of Christ with something unique to separate our Lord’s birth from all other births. Although Christ lived a normal life like all other people, His birth was very different from all other people. His birth was a sign.
The second is that He was conceived by a virgin.
At the time of Isaiah’s prophecy no one could have envisaged that the virgin mentioned in the prophecy would conceive without a man. It was only at the annunciation of Christ’s birth to Mary that the Holy Spirit showed how the virgin would conceive. Many people stumble at the notion of a virgin birth. The reason is that such an event was unknown in real human experience. But that is exactly why the prophecy stated that His birth would be a sign. Christ is the only one to be truly born of a virgin.
The third is that He is God with us.
The name announced for the child of the virgin is Immanuel. It is a name that describes the mission of the child. His coming to the earth will signify God living among human beings. In Christ, God actually experienced human life.
This prophecy helps us to see how God infuses the usual with the unusual; the natural with the supernatural. Our Lord can use the uninitiated to work out His purposes. He chose a virgin, someone uninitiated and with no experience, as the vessel to manifest the greatest miracle ever. God still does that today. He can take people who are seen as nobodies to do great things. Allow God to use you to manifest His amazing grace to the world.
