But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. –

Matthew 13:16-17

Many of us wish we had lived in the days of the Old Testament prophets. We read about all that the Lord did with them and through them and desire their days. However, Jesus tells us that the prophets and righteous people of old wished above all else to have seen and heard from Him.

Blessed are our eyes.

Though we did not live in the days of Jesus, the gospels recorded His life and days for us. As we read the gospels, we see Jesus, the Son of God alive and working. Many times when we read the Bible, we fail to see Jesus. Some only see Abraham or Moses or David or Elijah but never see Jesus. Christ is the centre of our faith. He must occupy our view when we approach the scriptures.

Blessed are your ears.

Thank God that we still hear Jesus in our day. The Old Testament prophets and righteous people did not hear the words of Jesus. They spoke about His coming and His works, but they did not hear His words. They did not hear the parables of Jesus as we listen to them now. They did not hear His promises as we hear them now.

This week we have been privileged to hear the words of Jesus. By just hearing His word and feeding on it this week, we are blessed.

May the Lord bless His word in our lives and give us a great harvest of His glory.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the opportunity to hear Your word. Help me to be a doer of all that I hear. In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
