But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 6:33

You don’t have to be a historical scholar to see that every kingdom on the face of the earth has either failed, or is on its way to failure. I think of the great kingdoms of Babylon, Greece, and Rome, and I think of even those that have fallen in our lifetime, like communist regimes in Eastern Europe and many dictatorships in the Muslim world just recently.

All of the kingdoms of the world will eventually come to an end. There will come a day when nations of America, Great Britain, China will be no more, whether it be when Jesus returns or before. That’s because while earthly kingdoms are temporary, God’s Kingdom is eternal.

That’s exactly why God calls us to seek His Kingdom first. You see, when Jesus came, He made it possible to experience a foretaste of the Kingdom He would ultimately bring to earth when He returns. And because of that, anyone who believes in Christ has a citizenship and an inheritance in that Kingdom.

So as the “Christmas high” winds down and real life sets in again, live in the light of your heavenly citizenship. God’s Kingdom is the only enduring kingdom, so seek the Kingdom. Find your security first and foremost in who you are in Him!

Prayer:

Lord, help me love and live for your Kingdom.
