Meaning

Copy <1,,5262, hupodeigma>

from hupo, "under," deiknumi, "to show," properly denotes "what is shown below or privately;" it is translated "example," Heb 8:5, AV (RV, "copy"). It signifies (a) a sign suggestive of anything, the delineation or representation of a thing, and so, a figure, "copy;" in Heb 9:23 the RV has "copies," for the AV, "patterns;" (b) an example for imitation, Joh 13:15, Jam 5:10; for warning, Heb 4:11, 2Pe 2:6 (AV "ensample"). See EXAMPLE, PATTERN.

Note: Cp. hupogrammos (hupo, "under," grapho, "to write"), "an underwriting, a writing copy, an example," is used in 1Pe 2:21.
