Meaning
primarily denotes "to ponder, resolve in one's mind" (dia, "through," lego, "to say"); then, "to converse, dispute, discuss, discourse with;" most frequently, "to reason or dispute with." In Heb 12:5 the RV, "reasoneth with" is to be preferred to the AV, "speaketh unto." The AV translates it "preached," in Act 20:7, Act 20:9; this the RV corrects to "discoursed," lit., "dialogue," i.e., not by way of a sermon, but by a "discourse" of a more conversational character. See DISPUTE, PREACH, REASON, SPEAK. In the Sept., Exo 6:27, Jdg 8:1, Isa 63:1
