Meaning

Full

denotes "full," (a) in the sense of "being filled," materially, Mat 14:20, Mat 15:37, Mar 8:19 (said of baskets "full" of bread crumbs); of leprosy, Luk 5:12; spiritually, of the Holy Spirit, Luk 4:1, Act 6:3, Act 7:55, Act 11:24; grace and truth, Joh 1:14; faith, Act 6:5; grace and power, Act 6:8; of the effects of spiritual life and qualities, seen in good works, Act 9:36; in an evil sense, of guile and villany, Act 13:10; wrath, Act 19:28; (b) in the sense of "being complete," "full corn in the ear," Mar 4:28; of a reward hereafter, 2Jo 1:8.

probably akin to a root signifying "to measure," hence conveys the sense of "having full measure," (a) of material things, a vessel, Joh 19:29; a net, Joh 21:11; (b) metaphorically, of thoughts and feelings, exercised (1) in evil things, hypocrisy, Mat 23:28; envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity, Rom 1:29; the utterances of the tongue, Jam 3:8; adultery, 2Pe 2:14; (2) in virtues, goodness, Rom 15:14; mercy, etc., Jam 3:17.

"to be full, to be heavily laden with," was primarily used of a ship; it is chiefly used in the NT of evil contents, such as extortion and excess, Mat 23:25; dead men's bones, Mat 23:27; extortion and wickedness, Luk 11:39; cursing, Rom 3:14; blasphemy, Rev 17:3; abominations, Rev 17:4; of Divine judgments, Rev 15:17, Rev 21:9; (RV, "laden," AV, "full"); of good things, Rev 4:6, Rev 4:8, Rev 5:8.

Notes: (1) Gemizo (see FILL, A, No. 9) is always rendered "to fill" in RV. (2) For Act 2:13, AV, see FILL, No. 11. (3) For "fullgrown," Heb 5:14, RV, see AGE, No. 2; for Jam 1:15, RV, see FINISH, Note (2).
