Glad (be, make), Gladly

is the usual word for "rejoicing, being glad;" it is rendered by the verb "to be glad" in Mar 14:11, Luk 15:32, Luk 22:5, Luk 23:8, Joh 8:56, Joh 11:15, Joh 20:20, Act 11:23, Act 13:48; in the following the RV has "to rejoice" for AV, "to be glad," Rom 16:19, 1Co 16:17, 2Co 13:9, 1Pe 4:13, Rev 19:7. See FAREWELL, No. 4, GREETING, HAIL, JOY, REJOICE.

"to exult, rejoice greatly," is chiefly used in the Middle Voice (Active in Luk 1:47; some mss. have the Passive in Joh 5:35, "to be made glad"). In the OT, it is found abundantly in the Psalms, from Psa 2:11 onward to Psa 149:2, Psa 149:5 (Sept.). It conveys the idea of jubilant exultation, spiritual "gladness," Mat 5:12, "be exceeding glad," the Lord's command to His disciples; Luk 1:47, in Mary's song; Luk 10:21, of Christ's exultation ("rejoiced"); cp. Act 2:26, "(My tongue) was glad," AV (RV, "rejoiced"); Joh 8:56, of Abraham; Act 16:34, RV, "rejoiced greatly" (of the Philippian jailor); 1Pe 1:6, 1Pe 1:8, 1Pe 4:13 ("with exceeding joy"), of believers in general; in Rev 19:7, RV, "be exceeding glad" (AV, "rejoice"). See REJOICE.

"to cheer, gladden," is rendered "maketh ... glad" in 2Co 2:2. See FARE, MERRY, REJOICE.

"gladly" (from hedus, "sweet"), is used in Mar 6:20, Mar 12:37, 2Co 11:19.

the superlative degree of No. 1, "most gladly, most delightedly, with great relish," is rendered "most gladly" in 2Co 12:9, 2Co 12:15 (RV; AV, "very gladly").

"with delight, delightedly, gladly," is found in Act 21:17. It is absent from the best texts in Act 2:41 (see the RV).
