Cock, Cock-crowing <1,,220, alektor>

"a cock," perhaps connected with a Hebrew phrase for the oncoming of the light, is found in the passages concerning Peter's denial of the Lord, Mat 26:34, Mat 1:26-75, Mar 14:30, Mar 14:68, Mar 14:72, Luk 22:34, Luk 1:22-61, Joh 13:38, Joh 18:27.

<2,,219, alektorophonia>

denotes "cock-crowing" (alketor, and phone, "a sound"), Mar 13:35. There were two "cock-crowings," one after midnight, the other before dawn. In these watches the Jews followed the Roman method of dividing the night. The first "cock-crowing" was at the third watch of the night. That is the one mentioned in Mar 13:35. Mark mentions both; see Mar 14:30. The latter, the second, is that referred to in the other Gospels and is mentioned especially as "the cock-crowing."
