<2,,3989, pelagos>
"the sea," Act 27:5, denotes also "the depth" (of the sea), Mat 18:6. The word is most probably connected with a form of plesso, "to strike," and plege, "a blow," suggestive of the tossing of the waves. Some would connect it with plax, "a level board," but this is improbable, and less applicable to the general usage of the word, which commonly denotes the sea in its restless character. See SEA.
