Lucre (filthy)

"gain" (cp. kerdaino, "to gain, get gain"), is translated "gain" in Phi 1:21, Phi 3:7; "lucre" in Tit 1:11 (preceded by aischros, "filthy"). See GAIN.

denotes "greedy of base gains" (aischros, and A, as above), 1Ti 3:8, "greedy of filthy lucre;" so the RV in Tit 1:7, AV, "(given to) filthy lucre." In some mss. 1Ti 3:3.

denotes "from eagerness for base gain," 1Pe 5:2, "for filthy lucre."
