denotes (a) "the reed" mentioned in Mat 11:7, Mat 12:20, Luk 7:24, the same as the Heb., qaneh (among the various reeds in the OT), e.g., Isa 42:3, from which Mat 12:20 is quoted (cp. Job 40:21, Eze 29:6, "a reed with jointed, hollow stalk"); (b) "a reed staff, staff," Mat 1:27-30, Mat 27:48, Mar 15:19, Mar 15:36 (cp. rhabdos, "a rod;" in 2Ki 18:21, rhabdos kalamine); (c) "a measuring reed or rod," Rev 11:1, Rev 1:21-16; (d) "a writing reed, a pen," 3Jo 1:13; see PEN.
