If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the LORD, to do good or bad of my own will. What the LORD says, that I must speak . —

Numbers 24:13

As a Christian or Pastor, there is always a temptation to say, preach or post on social media what is fashionable and likely to pull a crowd or boost your ratings. The danger with this outlook is that undesirable considerations can easily influence your message. The same principle applies when we are confronted with an issue or challenge that requires a decision. We must always endeavour to stick with what God says about any situation that confronts us.

Numbers 22:3 says King Balak and the whole of Moab were exceedingly afraid and sick with dread at the prospect of war with Israel because of their numbers and might. Balak therefore approached Balaam the prophet to curse Israel. When he realised that the prophet was hesitant, he offered financial inducements to Balaam to prophecy evil, contrary to what God had told him. Balaam’s initial response was to stress that money could never ‘buy’ his message.

In 2 Timothy 4:2-4, Paul warned Timothy to preach and teach God’s word at all times because “the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” Have an unwavering commitment to say only that which God directs or instructs you to. Popularity and social media likes cannot be a substitute for the integrity of God’s word. Allow God’s unadulterated word to richly abide in you and refuse to be compromised.

Prayer:

Lord, I commit to let the word of Christ dwell richly in me.
