Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. –

James 4:17

It is normal for us to think of sin only as something we do wrong.  Some of us have a long list of don’ts – don’t lie, don’t steal, don’t kill, don’t commit adultery. Yes, all of these are sins but sin is not only doing what you should not do. Sin is also failing to do what we ought to do. It is called, ‘the sin of omission’.

Who is a greater sinner? The one who says in his heart there is no God or the one who says there is a God but lives his life as if God does not exist? Those who do not profess any faith in God are described as `fools’ in the Bible but the ‘greater fool’ is the one who loudly proclaims his faith in God but silently disobeys every instruction of God. Many go to church and are content to just sit around and never commit to anything. They love God but never lift a finger to do anything for Him. They don’t mind watching others give the money while they enjoy the services.

They don’t mind watching others do the soul-winning while they rejoice at the growth of the church. They praise the commitment of others whilst they remain disconnected from the ministry of the church. That is the sin of omission.

Let me ask you some questions. Has God told you to pray for somebody today? Did you pray for that person? Has God told you to straighten out a bad relationship with another person? Have you done that? Not doing what you are told to do is as bad as doing what you are told not to do.

Prayer:

Lord, I yield myself in obedience to do what you ask me to do.
