Luke 1:45
Divine favour must be received with faith. God’s favour found Mary and Mary’s faith connected with God. Think about it. What if Mary had doubted the message from the angel? Would she still be the mother of Christ? I doubt it. The lesson here is that after God’s favour has been shown to us, we must respond in faith to what God tells us to do. Favour doesn’t do it all by itself.
Elizabeth assured Mary that because she believed, ‘there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord’. God performs His word to those who believe in what He has said. There is a sequence to how the Lord does things for us.
First, God makes a promise. The Lord wraps His intentions in His promises. When He wants to do something, He says it. And what He has said, He does. That is why reading and studying the Bible is an essential pillar of our Christian faith. In the Bible, we see God’s intentions and promises for us.
Then, faith receives the promise. We must believe God’s promises and intentions. When we encounter God in the scriptures, we must go a step further and accept what He says as true. Though the Bible was written a long time ago, its message speaks to us at all times. Faith is trusting that the Lord will do what He has said He would do.
After faith receives, God performs. When we receive and believe God’s promises, the Lord fulfills what He has promised. The Lord has all the power to make His word come to pass. He can move the events of history and turn around the forces of nature to honour what He has promised.
In Mary, we see a promise made, a promise believed, and a promise fulfilled.
