Meaning
"to await, expect" (pros, "to" or "towards," dokeo, "to think, be of opinion"), is translated "to look for," e.g., in Mat 11:3, 2Pe 1:3-14; the RV renders it by the verb "to expect, to be in expectation," in some instances, as does the AV in Luk 3:15, Act 3:5, See EXPECT.
"to receive favorably," also means "to expect," and is rendered "to look for," e.g., in Luk 2:38, Luk 23:51, Act 24:15, RV (AV, "allow"); Tit 2:13, Jud 1:21. See ACCEPT, A, No. 3, ALLOW, No. 4.
primarily "to receive from another," hence, "to expect, to await," is translated "he looked for" in Heb 11:10; in 1Co 16:11, AV, "I look for" (RV, "I expect"). See EXPECT, No. 1.
Notes: (1) In Phi 3:20, Heb 9:28, AV, apekdechomai (the verb in the preceding No. extended by apo, "from"), "to await" or "expect eagerly," is translated "look for" (RV, "wait for;" so AV everywhere else). See WAIT. (2) In Act 28:6, AV, prosdokao, "to expect," is translated "they looked" (RV, "they expected"), and "they had looked" (RV, "they were long in expectation").
akin to A, No. 1, is translated "a looking after" in Luk 21:26, AV ("expectation," as in Act 12:11, AV and RV). See EXPECTATION.
akin to A, No. 3, is translated "looking for" in Heb 10:27, AV. See EXPECTATION.
