Foresail <1,,736, artemon>

from artao, "to fasten to," is rendered "mainsail" in Act 27:40, AV; RV, "foresail." As to the particular kind of sail there mentioned, Sir William Ramsay, quoting from Juvenal concerning the entrance of a disabled ship into harbor by means of a prow-sail, indicates that the artemon would be a sail set on the bow.
