Meaning

Side

"a side" (cp. Eng., "pleurisy"), is used of the "side" of Christ, into which the spear was thrust, Joh 19:34, Joh 20:20, Joh 20:25, Joh 20:27 (some mss. have it in Mat 27:49; see RV marg.); elsewhere, in Act 12:7.

an adverb, signifying "beyond, on the other side," is used (a) as a preposition and translated " on the other side of," e.g., in Mar 5:1, Luk 8:22, Joh 6:1, RV; Joh 6:22, Joh 6:25; (b) as a noun with the article, e.g., Mat 8:18, Mat 8:28, Mat 14:22, Mat 16:5. See BEYOND, No. 2.

Notes: (1) In Luk 9:47, the preposition para, "by the side of," with the dative case of the pronoun heautou, is rendered "by His side," RV (AV, "by Him"). (2) See also EITHER, EVERYWHERE, No. 3 HIGHWAY, RIGHT.
